Lyngdorf RoomPerfect: Complete Setup & Optimization Guide

Room correction can make a significant difference to a Hi-Fi system, but only when it understands both the loudspeakers and the room in which they are playing.

1. Finalize speaker and subwoofer placement.
2. Place the microphone at ear height in your main listening position.
3. Complete the Focus measurement.
4. Take additional measurements throughout the room.
5. Vary microphone position, height and orientation.

Lyngdorf's RoomPerfect takes a different approach from conventional room correction. Rather than simply measuring the frequency response at one listening position and forcing it towards a predefined flat target, RoomPerfect uses measurements throughout the room to build an acoustic understanding of the loudspeakers and their environment.
The result can be particularly effective in real living rooms, where speaker placement, furniture, room dimensions and listening positions are rarely acoustically ideal.
In this guide, we explain how to prepare and perform a RoomPerfect calibration, how to use Focus and Global listening modes, and how to avoid some of the most common setup mistakes.
What Does Lyngdorf RoomPerfect Actually Do?
Every loudspeaker interacts with the room.
Walls, floors, ceilings and furniture influence what reaches the listener, particularly at lower frequencies. Depending on the room and speaker position, this interaction can create excessive bass at certain frequencies, insufficient bass at others, and a loss of precision in imaging and soundstage.
RoomPerfect is designed to identify these interactions while preserving the inherent character of the loudspeakers.
Using the dedicated RoomPerfect microphone and calibration signal, the system takes an initial measurement at the main listening position followed by additional measurements distributed throughout the room.
These measurements allow RoomPerfect to build an acoustic map of the listening environment and distinguish more effectively between the behaviour of the loudspeaker and the influence of the room.
This distinction is important.
A room-correction system should not try to "repair" every characteristic it measures. Some characteristics belong to the loudspeaker itself and are part of its intended sound.
RoomPerfect is therefore not simply an automatic graphic equalizer.
Its objective is to reduce detrimental room interaction while retaining the musical character of the loudspeaker.
1. Get the System Right Before Running RoomPerfect
One of the most important principles is also one of the simplest:
RoomPerfect should optimize a properly configured system, not replace proper system setup.
Before starting calibration, finalize the physical installation as much as possible.
Check:
- speaker position;
- listening position;
- speaker connections and polarity;
- subwoofer connections;
- amplifier configuration;
- crossover configuration where applicable.
If you intend to experiment with substantially different speaker positions, do this before performing your final RoomPerfect calibration.
Moving a loudspeaker or subwoofer significantly after calibration changes its interaction with the room.
Don't assume RoomPerfect requires conventional speaker placement
There is an important nuance here.
Many traditional Hi-Fi recommendations suggest moving speakers well away from walls. That is not automatically the optimum approach with every Lyngdorf-based system.
Speaker boundary interaction can be used deliberately, and some Lyngdorf loudspeaker/subwoofer configurations are specifically designed around particular placement and crossover strategies.
The correct starting point therefore depends on the loudspeaker and system.
For conventional third-party speakers, start with a sensible position for the room and the manufacturer's placement recommendations. For a complete Lyngdorf system, follow Lyngdorf's recommended configuration.
Then let RoomPerfect work from that known starting point.
2. Prepare the Room
RoomPerfect is designed to work in a real listening environment.
You do not need to empty the room or transform it into an acoustic laboratory.
In fact, the room should normally represent the conditions in which you actually listen.
Leave the normal furniture in place. If curtains are normally closed during listening, calibrate that way. If doors are normally closed, keep them closed.
The objective is to measure your actual listening room.
You should nevertheless avoid unnecessary disturbance while measurements are taking place.
Before starting:
- place the microphone securely on its stand;
- connect the supplied RoomPerfect microphone correctly;
- keep the room reasonably quiet;
- leave speakers and furniture in their normal positions;
- make sure no object temporarily blocks a loudspeaker.
Use the dedicated RoomPerfect microphone supplied for the system.
3. Start With the Focus Position
RoomPerfect begins with the most important location: your primary listening position.
This is the Focus Position.

Place the microphone where your head would normally be when listening.
Do not simply place it in the geographical centre of the sofa if that is not where you actually sit.
The first measurement gives RoomPerfect detailed information about the sound at this specific listening position.
Microphone height matters
Position the microphone approximately at normal listening ear height.
A microphone sitting on the seat cushion is not measuring the same acoustic position as your ears.
Likewise, placing it considerably above your normal listening height provides information about a position you will rarely use.
Think of the first measurement as:
Where do I want this system to sound its most precise?
That is your Focus Position.
4. The Room Measurements: Think in Three Dimensions
After the Focus measurement, RoomPerfect asks for measurements at different positions throughout the room.
This is where RoomPerfect differs fundamentally from systems based primarily on a small cluster of measurements around the listening seat.
The purpose is not to measure your sofa repeatedly.
The purpose is to help RoomPerfect understand the room.
Move the microphone to genuinely different locations.
Vary:
- distance from the loudspeakers;
- left/right position;
- front/back position;
- microphone height;
- microphone orientation.
Think of the listening room as a three-dimensional volume.

You want the measurements to describe that volume.
A common mistake
A very common instinct is to make every additional measurement close to the main listening position.
For example:
- centre of the sofa;
- 30 cm left;
- 30 cm right;
- slightly forward;
- slightly backward.
That may seem logical, but it provides multiple descriptions of essentially the same part of the room.
RoomPerfect already has the Focus measurement for your main listening location.
The subsequent measurements have another job: building knowledge of the room itself.
Spread them around.
5. Don't Measure Only at Ear Height
Another frequent mistake is keeping every microphone position at approximately the same height.
A room is three-dimensional.
Use different heights during the room measurements.
Some measurements can be lower than the listening position, others higher.
Similarly, don't keep the microphone pointing in exactly the same direction for every room measurement.
The objective is diversity of acoustic information, not geometric symmetry.
6. Avoid Extreme Measurement Positions
Variety is useful. Extreme positions are generally less useful.

Don't deliberately place the microphone:
- directly against a wall;
- in a corner;
- immediately beside a loudspeaker;
- on the floor;
- against the ceiling;
- inside furniture.
These positions can be dominated by very local acoustic effects.
The objective is to sample the usable volume of the listening room.
A useful mental model is:
distributed, varied and representative.
Not:
random at any cost.
7. Understanding RoomKnowledge
During calibration, Lyngdorf displays a value called RoomKnowledge.
This indicates how much acoustic information RoomPerfect has gathered about the room.
It is tempting to turn this into a game:
"I have 94%. How do I get to 100%?"
That is not the right objective.
RoomKnowledge is a calibration indicator, not a sound-quality score.
A system showing a higher percentage is not automatically better calibrated than one with a slightly lower percentage.
What matters is that RoomPerfect has gathered sufficiently diverse information about the listening environment.
If the system requests further measurements, add another genuinely different position rather than moving the microphone a few centimetres simply to increase the number.
Do not pursue 100% RoomKnowledge for its own sake.
8. Focus vs Global: Which Should You Use?
Once RoomPerfect has been calibrated, two concepts become particularly important:
Focus
Focus prioritizes the main listening position established during calibration.
We typically recommend trying Focus when:
- listening alone from your preferred seat;
- doing concentrated music listening;
- evaluating a recording or system change;
- you want optimum performance at the primary listening position.
Global
Global is intended to provide a balanced result over the wider listening area rather than optimizing primarily for one specific seat.
It is particularly useful when:
- several people are listening;
- watching television or movies;
- moving around the room;
- music is playing socially rather than from one fixed listening position.
Neither mode is inherently "better."
They solve different problems.
For a dedicated listening session from one chair, Focus will often be the natural starting point.
For family or multi-seat listening, try Global.
The important advice is simple:
Use your ears.
RoomPerfect gives you the tools; the appropriate mode depends on how the room is being used.
9. RoomPerfect and Subwoofers
Subwoofer integration is one of the areas where room acoustics become particularly important.
Bass wavelengths are long, and their interaction with room dimensions can create large variations between listening positions.
Adding a subwoofer is therefore not simply a matter of producing "more bass."
A correctly integrated subwoofer can extend low-frequency response while also allowing the overall system to perform more coherently.
RoomPerfect can integrate systems that include subwoofers, but the basic configuration still needs to be correct before calibration.
Before running RoomPerfect:
- Connect the subwoofer according to the intended system configuration.
- Configure the amplifier outputs correctly.
- Set the appropriate crossover configuration.
- Follow the relevant manufacturer's recommendations for the subwoofer controls.
- Finalize the subwoofer position.
- Only then perform the RoomPerfect calibration.
If the subwoofer position or crossover configuration is changed substantially afterwards, perform a new RoomPerfect calibration.
10. One or Two Subwoofers?
Two subwoofers are not necessarily about achieving twice as much bass.
One of their most useful advantages can be more even low-frequency distribution within the room.
Depending on the room and placement, two correctly configured subwoofers can excite room modes differently and provide a more consistent bass response across the listening area.
RoomPerfect can then work with this system-room interaction.
This can be particularly interesting for:
- larger listening rooms;
- multiple listening positions;
- systems where bass consistency matters as much as maximum extension;
- high-performance stereo/home-cinema installations.
However, two poorly positioned or incorrectly configured subwoofers are not automatically superior to one properly integrated subwoofer.
System design still comes first.
11. Don't Try to Fix Every Acoustic Null With More Bass
One of the important principles behind RoomPerfect concerns acoustic nulls.
At certain frequencies and positions, reflected sound can cancel direct sound and create a significant dip in response.
Trying to correct a deep acoustic cancellation simply by applying large amounts of electronic boost is problematic.
It consumes amplifier power and loudspeaker headroom while often failing to solve the underlying acoustic cancellation.
RoomPerfect is designed to avoid this kind of indiscriminate over-correction.
This illustrates one of the fundamental differences between intelligent room correction and simply making a frequency-response graph look flat.
A flat graph is not the objective. Better sound is.
12. RoomPerfect Does Not Make Every Loudspeaker Sound the Same
This is another misconception worth addressing.
If room correction simply forced every loudspeaker towards exactly the same response, it could remove part of what made you choose that loudspeaker in the first place.
RoomPerfect is specifically designed to preserve the loudspeaker's inherent sound characteristics while addressing detrimental room effects.
A Wharfedale should still sound like a Wharfedale.
A Pylon should still sound like a Pylon.
RoomPerfect is not intended to turn them into a generic "RoomPerfect loudspeaker."
This is one reason why loudspeaker selection and amplifier matching remain important even in a system with sophisticated room correction.
13. RoomPerfect Is Not a Substitute for Speaker Quality
RoomPerfect can address room interaction.
It cannot change the fundamental capabilities of a loudspeaker.
It cannot give a small loudspeaker unlimited output capability, remove distortion inherent to a driver, or create low-frequency extension that the speaker and system cannot physically produce.
The same applies to amplification.
This is why we still recommend building the system in the traditional order:
good loudspeakers + appropriate amplification + correct setup + RoomPerfect optimization.
RoomPerfect is the final part of a coherent system, not a substitute for one.
14. When Should You Run RoomPerfect Again?
You do not need to recalibrate every time you move a cushion.
However, we recommend performing a new calibration after a significant change to the acoustic system.
Examples include:
Moving the loudspeakers significantly
Their interaction with walls and room modes has changed.
Moving the subwoofer
Low-frequency room interaction can change substantially even after a relatively modest positional change.
Changing loudspeakers
The new speakers have different acoustic behaviour.
Adding or removing a subwoofer
The bass system has fundamentally changed.
Changing crossover configuration
The division of work between loudspeakers and subwoofer has changed.
Major room changes
Large changes to furniture, room layout or acoustic treatment can justify recalibration.
A simple rule is:
If the change substantially affects how the loudspeakers interact with the room, run RoomPerfect again.
15. Common RoomPerfect Setup Mistakes
After helping customers configure audio systems, these are the mistakes we would particularly avoid.
Mistake 1 — Measuring the sofa instead of the room
After the Focus measurement, spread the microphone positions around the room.
Mistake 2 — Keeping every measurement at the same height
Use the three-dimensional volume of the room.
Mistake 3 — Chasing 100% RoomKnowledge
RoomKnowledge is not a performance score.
Mistake 4 — Calibrating before finalizing speaker placement
Make the important physical decisions first.
Mistake 5 — Moving the subwoofer after calibration
Recalibrate after significant changes.
Mistake 6 — Using the wrong microphone
Use the dedicated RoomPerfect microphone supplied or specified by Lyngdorf.
Mistake 7 — Expecting room correction to replace system matching
RoomPerfect optimizes the loudspeaker/room relationship. It does not make speaker choice irrelevant.
Mistake 8 — Judging only from measurements or percentages
The final test is listening.
16. Should You Use Acoustic Treatment With RoomPerfect?
RoomPerfect and acoustic treatment should not necessarily be viewed as competing approaches.
Good acoustic design can address issues such as excessive reverberation, early reflections and room ambience that go beyond what any electronic correction system should attempt to solve.
At the same time, conventional acoustic treatment is not always practical in a living room.
RoomPerfect is particularly attractive because it addresses important speaker-room interactions electronically without requiring the listening room to become a recording studio.
In a dedicated listening room or home cinema, carefully designed acoustic treatment and RoomPerfect can therefore be complementary.
In a normal living space, RoomPerfect can provide substantial benefits while preserving the room's everyday function and appearance.
17. RoomPerfect Across the Lyngdorf Range

Frequently Asked Questions
Is RoomPerfect the same as EQ?
No. RoomPerfect uses measurements of the loudspeaker and room interaction to generate its correction. It is considerably more sophisticated than manually adjusting bass and treble or applying a conventional graphic EQ.
Does RoomPerfect change the character of my speakers?
Its design objective is the opposite: to address detrimental room effects while preserving the loudspeaker's inherent sound characteristics.
Do I need acoustic treatment if I have RoomPerfect?
Not necessarily. It depends on the room and your objectives. RoomPerfect can address important room-related problems electronically, while physical acoustic treatment can address other aspects such as reverberation and reflections. The two approaches can be complementary.
Should I reach 100% RoomKnowledge?
No. Do not treat RoomKnowledge as a score. The goal is to provide sufficiently varied information about the room, not to obtain the highest possible percentage.
Should all RoomPerfect measurements be around my listening position?
No. The first Focus measurement represents the primary listening position. Subsequent measurements should provide RoomPerfect with information about different parts of the room.
Can RoomPerfect integrate a subwoofer?
Yes. RoomPerfect is designed to work with systems including subwoofers. Correct system configuration and crossover setup should be completed before calibration.
Should I recalibrate after moving my speakers?
If the change is significant, yes. Moving a speaker or subwoofer changes its interaction with the room.
Is Focus always better than Global?
No. Focus is useful when listening from the main calibrated position. Global is useful when a wider listening area matters. Try both according to how you are using the system.
