Overview

The Mission 778CDT CD transport is a compact digital source designed for listeners who want to keep a CD collection at the centre of a modern HiFi system. Rather than incorporating its own DAC and analogue output stage, it concentrates on accurately reading the disc and delivering the digital signal to an external DAC, integrated amplifier or preamplifier.

Its half-width chassis matches the Mission 778X integrated amplifier and 778S network player, but the 778CDT can equally be used with any suitable DAC-equipped system. It also extends beyond conventional CD playback with support for music stored on USB drives.

Key Benefits

Mission uses a dedicated CD mechanism with precision servo control for stable disc rotation, accurate tracking and error correction. A temperature-compensated crystal oscillator acts as the master clock, while the transport, laser, decoder and clock sections use dedicated low-noise power supplies. The objective is straightforward: minimise interference and jitter before the digital signal reaches the connected DAC.

Both coaxial and optical S/PDIF outputs are provided, making system integration simple. The absence of an internal analogue output is intentional: the 778CDT is designed specifically for systems where digital-to-analogue conversion is handled elsewhere.

A rear USB connection adds useful flexibility for locally stored music, supporting WAV, MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC and APE files on compatible FAT16, FAT32 and exFAT storage devices.

Key Features

  • Dedicated compact CD transport
  • Precision optical CD mechanism with servo control
  • Temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) master clock
  • Separate low-noise supplies for transport, laser, decoder and clock sections
  • Playback of CD, CD-R, CD-RW and data CDs
  • USB-HDD music playback
  • WAV, MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC and APE file support via USB
  • Coaxial and optical S/PDIF digital outputs
  • OLED display with CD-Text support
  • Full-function remote control
  • Black and silver finishes

Ideal For

The Mission 778CDT is particularly suited to stereo systems that already include a capable DAC, whether inside an integrated amplifier, preamplifier or standalone converter. It is a natural partner for the Mission 778X, but its standard optical and coaxial outputs make it straightforward to integrate with electronics from other manufacturers.

Its compact dimensions also make it appealing where rack space is limited, while the USB playback function gives owners of locally stored digital music an additional source without turning the product into a network streamer.

Why We Selected This Product

The 778CDT takes a focused approach that makes sense in a well-planned digital system. By leaving digital-to-analogue conversion to the connected electronics, Mission can concentrate its engineering on disc reading, clock stability, power-supply isolation and reliable digital output.

We also appreciate the practical versatility of its USB playback and compact half-width format. For customers who own a substantial CD library and already have a DAC they trust, the 778CDT provides a purpose-built source without paying for redundant analogue circuitry or unnecessary network functions.
